Get a 2008 calendar of beautiful naked women at Island Fitness and, at the same time, help support those whose lives have been affected by breast cancer.
I can get intimidated by the ultra-athletes who, in their 40’s, 50’s and beyond, have muscle definition I didn’t possess in my 20’s and definitely don’t have now. But this arresting calendar of nudes–many of whom are familiar faces (if not bodies) from the gym, the road, the schools and T&C–is not at all intimidating.
It’s simply awesome.
Brainchild of island photographer Pete Saloutos, with breast cancer survivor and nationally ranked cyclist Lisa Lund, the calendar features island women in the altogether, while practicing their favorite sport or activity. Proceeds from the calendar will go to breast cancer charities. I snagged the image in this post from Pete’s website (hope you don’t mind, Pete), where you can see all of the calendar shots.
The calendar has hit the bigtime across the water, and was highlighted in the Seattle P-I today. It will be sold in various locations around Seattle. There will be a calendar-signing at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park on December 14 at 6:30 pm.
Of course, we don’t have to get on the ferry to get our mitts on this sexy, powerful and inspirational calendar. Island Fitness has plenty of calendars at the front counter right now.
Island Fitness has a particularly strong connection to this calendar. Lund maintains her physical therapy office there. One of the gym’s personal trainers was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and a former staff member, who is also a Women’s Masters Rower, had a double mastectomy last spring. I see all three of them at the gym all the time. I’m told that, in all, five gym staff members–all active and incredibly fit–have been diagnosed with cancer in the past couple of years.
Cancer isn’t the sentence of death and disability it once was. But it taxes its victims and their friends and families in ways the rest of us can only glimpse. What a great way to invite us to send our love, our prayers, and our own strength and determination to all who are wrestling with cancer, by creating a calendar that says in every picture, “We’re vital, we’re beautiful, and we love this life!”
[…] week’s post about the Lisa Lund calendar with its middle-aged women posing naked–”Naked women we know“–had the most views in one day of any of my posts–hundreds, in fact. I’d […]
