The mayor declared state of emergency for the island yesterday because of the deluge, as did Governor Gregoire for Kitsap County and elsewhere. We lost Internet service for 24 hours at our house (and it’s still iffy), but were otherwise unscathed. Not so in the Manitou Beach Drive neighborhood, where across-the-road waterfront became front yard lakes and water lapping at the door.
Here are pictures from this morning, after the worst of the rain was over:
According to the City website, to report water or debris in the roads, you should call the City’s Operations and Maintenance Department at 842-1212 (during business hours). To report power outages, call Puget Sound Energy at 1-888-225-5773. You can get sandbags from Fire Station 22 on Bucklin Hill. Stay dry!
UPDATE 12/5: The Kitsap County Health District sent out a press release yesterday regarding cleanup. The release says flood waters are contaminated and appropriate precautions should be taken. Read the press release (with advice on cleanup) here: floodcleanupnr1207.pdf

Amazing pictures! Thanks for doing the work of going around the island and finding these stunning images.
I can’t help worrying about the contamination from homes and cars around Kitsap. How will that be cleaned up?
Thanks Rebecca!
Good point Ms. Curmudgeon. For Kitsap County Health District’s information on flood waters and cleanup, see the link in the UPDATE I added today at the end of my post.
